Dracula Untold (2014) is a dark fantasy action film directed by Gary Shore, starring Luke Evans as Vlad III, the historical figure who would become the legendary Dracula. The film reimagines Dracula’s origin, blending history and supernatural elements into an epic tale of sacrifice and power.

Vlad Tepes, the Prince of Wallachia, is a noble and just ruler who once served as a ruthless warrior for the Ottoman Empire. Now, he seeks to protect his kingdom and family from an impending invasion by Sultan Mehmed II (Dominic Cooper), who demands 1,000 Wallachian boys—including Vlad’s own son—to serve in his army.

Desperate to save his people, Vlad seeks out an ancient and powerful creature, known as the Master Vampire (Charles Dance), who resides in a hidden cave. The vampire grants him supernatural strength, speed, and the ability to transform into a swarm of bats, but at a terrible cost—Vlad has three days to use his powers without succumbing to an insatiable bloodlust. If he drinks human blood within that time, he will be cursed to remain a vampire forever.

With his newfound abilities, Vlad wages war against the Ottoman forces, crushing entire battalions single-handedly. However, as the battle intensifies, his people begin to fear the dark power he wields. His wife, Mirena (Sarah Gadon), is tragically killed, and in his grief, Vlad fully embraces his vampiric nature, turning his remaining warriors into vampires to exact revenge on the Sultan.

After defeating Mehmed, Vlad seemingly perishes when he allows the sun to consume him. However, in the present day, he is revealed to have survived, now wandering the modern world as a vampire. The film ends with a hint of Dracula’s continued existence, setting up a potential future story.

Dracula Untold is a mix of historical drama, dark fantasy, and action, portraying Dracula not as a monster, but as a tragic hero willing to sacrifice his humanity for the love of his people and family.
