The Killer’s Game (2024) is a darkly comedic action thriller starring Dave Bautista as Joe Flood, a world-weary assassin whose life takes a chaotic turn after a medical misdiagnosis. While executing a hit at a Budapest opera house, Joe saves a dancer named Maize (Sofia Boutella) during the ensuing chaos, sparking an unlikely romance. As their relationship deepens, Joe is diagnosed with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease—a fatal neurodegenerative disorder—and given just months to live. Desperate to secure Maize’s future, he orchestrates a $2 million hit on himself through a rival handler, Marianna Antoinette (Pom Klementieff), ensuring Maize will collect his life insurance. However, moments before the contract activates at midnight, Joe learns his diagnosis was a lab error—but the hit can’t be canceled .

What follows is a frenetic battle for survival as Marianna, harboring a personal vendetta (Joe once killed her father), doubles the bounty and unleashes a parade of eccentric assassins. These include Terry Crews’ mercenary Lovedahl, Scottish brawlers Angus and Rory Mackenzie (Scott Adkins and Drew McIntyre), and a flamboyant dancer-assassin named Botas (Marko Zaror). Joe, aided by his mentor Zvi (Ben Kingsley), turns a remote castle into a death trap, dispatching attackers with brutal creativity—impaling one on antlers, blowing up others with their own grenades. Meanwhile, Lovedahl kidnaps Maize, forcing Joe into a desperate rescue mission that culminates in a blood-soaked showdown at a church, where Maize shockingly guns down an assailant herself .

The film blends over-the-top violence with absurd humor—like a bumbling apprentice hitman defecating himself mid-fight—but struggles to balance its tonal shifts. While Bautista and Boutella share genuine chemistry, the script underutilizes its ensemble (particularly Klementieff) and relies heavily on CGI gore. The climax sees Zvi executing Marianna for violating assassin codes, while Joe and Maize marry in a darkly comic twist: she suggests he keep killing to fund their child’s future. Directed by stuntman-turned-filmmaker J.J. Perry, The Killer’s Game delivers kinetic action but falters in narrative coherence, earning mixed reviews for its "Smokin’ Aces-meets-John Wick"
